New York State Police have announced that another body was recovered Thursday from waters of the Genesee River. This time at Letchworth State Park in Wyoming County, NY. Police and a medical examiner are working to identify the remains, the fourth body found in the river since October.

Letchworth State Park, in the town of Castile, is considered the “Grand Canyon of the East.” The river roars through the gorge over three major waterfalls between cliffs as high as 600 feet in places.

This is the fourth body recovered from the Genesee River since October.

In October 2023, the body of University of Rochester professor Heikki Rantakari was recovered from from the Genesee River in downtown Rochester. Rochester Police say Rantakari fell into the river.

In February 2024, another body was discovered in the river in downtown Rochester. The latest news reports said Rochester police were working to identify who it was.

In March, an unoccupied vehicle was discovered partially submerged in the river in Rochester. Police said it was stolen overnight in the city.

On May 2nd, a body was found in the River near Turning Point Park in Rochester. The latest news reports said the Monroe County Medical Examiner and Rochester Police were working to identify who it was.

The Genesee River is a tributary of Lake Ontario that flows north through from Pennsylvania, and through the Southern Tier into Central New York. The river contains several waterfalls at Letchworth State Park and Rochester.
